The Future of the WWW

Two articles I read recently throw up some possible scenarios for the WWW as we know it and fly in the face of the conventional wisdom that the Web is only going to get more global, faster and an essential part of our lives. The first article looks at the possible slowdowning of the Web in advanced economies; the second illustrates the likelihood of a two or three tier Web experience as developing countries with no advertising money get the low rent version of the Web.

Beyond Aid

See this story about the massive deployment of witch doctors in a state sponsored effort to neutralize witches! With attitudes like this trickling down from the highest offices in the land, how will it be possible to engage in rational approaches towards national development?

PS If our leaders really believe in the efficacy of witch doctors, why don’t they deploy them in an effort to boost growth rates in the economy? Should be cheaper than all those foreign loans they take out.

What happens when the oil runs out?

Interesting article about Gabon’s strategy (if you want it to term it that) to survive the rapidly approaching day when oil runs out. It appears the goal now is to jump onto other extractive industries such as minerals mining and timber logging. After all these years of oil, why wasn’t the human capital of Gabon improved to the extent that the country could move upstream and actually produce higher valued added items. What happens when the minerals and forests run out and there is nothing left to extract? Our grandchildren will be cursing us if we don’t do better in terms of passing on to them a better legacy.

Drug Wars

A doomsday scenario that looks more and more possible if we don’t address the issue of hard drug trafficking in Ghana. Do we want the sort of quality of life (not) found in Mexico or Columbia? Then we need to come up with a well-thought strategy and execute!

Coke Issues

Take a 7 year old, a mug of Coke and an open laptop and what is bound to happen? Yup, I haven’t been able to blog as much as I wanted due to my laptop being drenched in sugar water. I am finally getting serious about backing up my data! In the meantime I have been mulling over some of the simple things we can do to minimize corruption in places like Ghana and will be expanding on this soon.

In the meantime, I highly recommend Heart of Kongo, a novel I just finished that gives a vivid picture of the genesis of the European/African relationship and how it led to that horrific episode of our history called the Slave Trade.
